  • Sudan Ebola Virus Disease Vaccine and Treatments still Accesible in Uganda

    WHO and partners have immediately boosted their support to the Ugandan government’s response to an outbreak of Sudan virus disease outbreak (SVD, part of the Ebola family), including by facilitating access to a candidate vaccine and candidate treatments. The first 2160 doses of the vaccine candidate and the treatments are already in Kampala, Uganda, as they were prepositioned as part of outbreak preparedness.  

  • Professor Alison Elliot Honoured with OBE

    Congratulations to Professor Alison Elliott, Professor of Tropical Medicine, receives an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Medicine and Global Health.


    Based at the Medical Research Council Unit at the Uganda Virus Research Institute.

    She was recognized for her contributions to developing medical research in Zambia and Uganda, and for inspiring young African scientists.

    In October 2024, an intensive write-shop was held in Zanzibar for students from Tanzania funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), with additional support from the East African Consortium for Clinical Research (EACCR).

    Women are underrepresented in academic science careers, including health research. In sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of women scientists is even smaller, with huge disparities between men and women in higher positions in science and education achievements. Family and gender-related responsibilities are among factors that hinder most women from undertaking higher education at MSc and PhD levels in Africa.
