International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a momentous occasion that aimed to bridge the gender gap in the field of science and World AIDS Day, dedicated to raising awareness about HIV, combating the stigma associated with the virus, and remembering those who had lost their lives to AIDS.

Significant milestones have been made in the development of COVID19 diagnostics Technologies. Government of the republic of Uganda and the line Ministry of Health mandated Uganda Virus Research Institute to ensure quality of COVID19 diagnostics. Re-testing was one of the methods initiated by the UVRI to implement External Quality assessment of COVID19 molecular diagnostics.

Professor Moffat Nyirenda has been announced as the new Director of the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit (MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit). He will take over the role from Professor Pontiano Kaleebu on 1 April 2024.
